COTY awards are a mixed bag. While some of us take it with a grain of salt, I can't help but notice how some cars are so unworthy and yet still snag the "prestigious" award. Let's go back to 1997. Motor Trend decided to pick the Chevrolet Malibu as their Car of the Year. How can a car that can out-Camry a Camry in terms of being an automotive white good win? Maybe that was an achievement in itself. In fairness to them, the Import Car of the Year in 1997 was the E39. There are a lot more unworthy winners out there. Just post 'em up

Something to think about is that most COTY awards are only eligible if the car is a new design or a significant redesign. So there were some years that really didn't have any "good" cars introduced. Also the scoring tends to benefit the everyday commuter car over a truly special, very innovative low volume car.

Didn't the E39 come out in 1995 or 1996?

Which is beyond stupid. If it is the car of the year it should be the best car on sale that year. Period.
At the very least they should include latest MY of the prior year's winner to see if the new vehicle unseats the past champion.

"The Miata scores poorly because it cannot carry a roof rack and cannot tow"
Darn it

I told him several times that his car's name is Hilda and not Oskar, but to no avail. Sadly, he's no longer with us. Merry New Year, Coty!

It pains me to say this, but the Thunderbird revival. It was mentioned elsewhere that British cars are examples of "awesome idea, poor implementation." American cars have a tragic history towards the opposite. If given a good engine and drivetrain, this would have been the classic revival to own. They gave it a 3.9L engine. It was only available in 5 speed automatic. It was heavy . Everything except its looks were piss poor.
But damn she was beautiful. Like the girl in school who was stunning, but had to take meds for everything and wound up hospitalized before you finished college. Damn.
